Forms of samples of radiation-resistant composites tested in the Laboratory of Neutron Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR)At the end of 2017, rods with a diameter of 30 mm of three different modifications of materials of the ZEDEX series and, additionally, rods with a diameter of 20 mm for the manufacture of packaging containers from other modifications of the ZEDEX series were purchased from the company IC “Plastmass Group”, a resident of the Skolkovo JINR Foundation. Shipping and packing containers were machined from the resulting rods. The materials successfully passed the tests, withstood the modes of irradiation and received approval for use as consumables when working in neutron diffraction conditions.

A promising direction for the use of anti-friction composites of our production in the processing of uranium ores.

Problem:


A number of processes involving uranium hexafluoride are currently used in the processing of uranium. During its work, fluoroplastic composites with limited service life and weak physicomechanical properties are used for sealing under long-term exposure to ionizing radiation.


Decision:


The possibility of testing our radiation-resistant antifriction materials as seals for flanged connections of containers with uranium hexafluoride under conditions of constant exposure to ionizing radiation is being considered. The use of our materials will allow to increase the service life of parts in the conditions of radioactive exposure without a significant weakening of the physical and mechanical properties.

  • ANTI-FRICTION COMPOSITES ZEDEX

    Testing and use of anti-friction composites ZEDEX at the enterprise of Rosatom "Elemash"

    PROBLEM

     

    • when working under conditions of increased radiation, temperature and chemical exposure, nuclear swelling of most polymers, glass plastics, textolites, including fluoroplastics, graphite, and bronze was occurring at Elemash.


    DECISION

     

    • We have provided our radiation-resistant antifriction materials, which Elemash has been using in the most dangerous production areas since 2010: when transporting heated sulfuric and nitric acid against the background of ionizing radiation, to replace it. Depending on the application nodes, the service life of the equipment after the commissioning of our materials has increased by more than 3 times.

  • INKULEN PE WITH THE ADDITION OF BORON

    ADVANTAGES

     

    • One of the most effective known solid materials for neutron protection.

    • Does not require maintenance after installation.

    • It is possible to control the level of deceleration by changing the concentration of boron atoms in the material.

    • For the price in second place after the liquid protection.

    • Despite the comparable cost in comparison with the liquid protection, it is lower than in other types of solid protection of the same level of radiation resistance.

  • POLYURETHANE AND EPOXY MATERIALS FOR PROTECTION

    ADVANTAGES

    • Acceptable quality of protection.

    • Unlimited geometric parameters of the application.

    DISADVANTAGES

    • The average level of free path of fast neutrons.

    • The average physico-mechanical properties due to the behavior of the basic components during irradiation.

    • High price category for neutron protection.

  • LIQUID NEUTRON PROTECTION

    ADVANTAGES

     

    • High efficiency with small thicknesses.

    DISADVANTAGES

     

    • Increased risks in the transport of fissile materials and the destruction of waterproofing.

    • The high cost of maintenance (necessary supplements, the need for regular monitoring of the level and aging of the mixtures).

    • The need for expensive waterproofing containers.
